International Mother Earth Day – April 22

Press release
In April 2009, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day in resolution 63/278, with the fundamental objective of raising awareness in humans to change their habits of consumption and exploitation of natural resources, since the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) points out that the current rate of extinction could already be 10,000 times higher than the natural rate, indicating that the damage to land is a product of the indiscriminate exploitation of resources by companies and individuals.
It is time for governments to design, develop and implement effective policies to protect the environment, eliminating patterns of consumption with fossil fuels such as harmful coal-fired plants, open-pit mining and the extraction of sand from the river beds, instead promote renewable energies, organic agriculture, installation of wastewater treatment plants and the culture of water saving and recycling.
Responsible citizens should empower themselves and claim their right to live in a healthy and ecologically balanced environment, as provided in Article 67 of the Constitution of the Dominican Republic. Shared responsibility is one of the fundamental principles of environmental law, so that both government and citizenship must assume the responsibility of protecting the planet that with the habit of consumption we have, the survival of the human being is in danger.
