Reacher and Turner find Prudhomme in a derelict warehouse filled with drug addicts. Prudhomme turns out to be connected to Parasource, a private military company that is trying to cover up the murders. Reacher contacts Turner’s friend, Captain Anthony Espin, to move him into custody, but they are ambushed by Parasource operatives and Prudhomme is killed, while Reacher rescues a wounded Espin. Parasource’s CEO, General James Harkness, sends The Hunter to capture Sam. The trio goes to New Orleans in search of Daniel Prudhomme, the only eyewitness to the murders for which Turner has been framed. En route, Sam reveals that it was she who filed the paternity suit, to gain financial support from Reacher for her mother.

The biggest problem was, regardless of how cool and effortless Cruise can be, he just didn’t feel like Reacher from the books. He’s a bit too polished, and people found some gripes with his height, considering Cruise is around 5’7″, while Reacher from the books is at a towering 6’5″. This is part of what makes Reacher such a powerful character—stature often plays a part in someone looking a certain way; Reacher is meant to be a slightly intimidating figure, and Cruise, well, isn’t. This is why, as much as Jack Reacher is a decent action flick to enjoy on a quiet evening, it’s also divisive. The plot was predictable, and the action, while decent, didn’t have the same impact.

Reacher is a kind of gun for hire on the roam, and a private investigator whenever necessary. It’s a sequel nobody really asked for, but was made anyway, in an attempt to further humanize Cruise’s Reacher from the first movie by introducing a subplot about the character having a potential daughter. The movie was a box office success, and Cruise was praised for his performance, but Never Go Back was ultimately received with a pretty lukewarm reception.
Even Forbes’ critics, who notably despised Season 2, praised Season 3 for improving greatly upon the lore, character building, and plotting. Indeed, with Season 3, we noticed the writing becoming tighter, the fights become harder, and the pacing is cinematic, if sometimes poetic, too. This is now the definitive version of this character—clever, brutal, and larger than life in more ways than one.

When Season 1 of Reacher was announced, and Alan Ritchson was the main candidate for the role, it felt like the fans of the novel series would be getting exactly what they wanted. Ritchson is the kind of universal man, appealing to all sexes, so those who’ve read the books were joined by their partners in watching Ritchson engage in some brute force and deadpan humor.
Reacher is back with his old crew in a hot pursuit that doubles as a smart and classy procedural. There’s a bit more conspiratorial work there, as he and his team work to stop illegal arms trafficking between a famous corporation and a terrorist arms broker. The plotting gets a bit loud and pulpy, but we love this kind of Reacher—firing on all cylinders and ready to tackle the world with his massive biceps.
